    The research on sodium batteries began in the 1980s, and its development can be roughly divided into three stages. The period from 1980 to 2010 was the first stage, during which sodium batteries were in the laboratory research and development stage. When sodium batteries and lithium batteries were first developed, they were around the same time. However, compared to lithium batteries, sodium batteries have lower energy density due to the inherent characteristics of sodium element, and the research and development speed of positive and negative electrode materials is also slower than lithium batteries. So lithium batteries entered the commercial stage in 1991, while sodium batteries entered a period of abundant technological reserves and were researched and developed in the laboratory for a long time. The period from 2011 to 2016 was the second phase, during which sodium battery demonstration products began to emerge. In 2011, Faradion, the world's first sodium ion battery company, was established in the UK. Since then, there have been more and more sodium ion battery companies, and demonstration products of sodium batteries have gradually been seen by everyone. In 2015, there was a demonstration of sodium ion soft pack batteries, and in 2016, small-scale trials of sodium ion soft pack batteries and cylindrical batteries were conducted. From 2017 to now, it is the third stage, and sodium batteries have begun to move towards practical applications. In 2017, Zhongke HaiNa, the first sodium ion battery company in China, was established, and the first demonstration of a sodium ion electric bicycle was also launched in the same year. In 2019, the first 100kWh sodium ion battery energy storage power station demonstration was held in China. In 2021, CATL launched the first generation of sodium ion batteries, and the world's first 1MWh sodium ion battery photovoltaic storage and charging intelligent microgrid system officially began operation in the same year. In the process of continuous exploration, the application scenarios and development ideas of sodium ion batteries have become increasingly clear, opening up a new journey of practical applications.
    The sodium battery technology has been validated on two wheeled electric vehicles, and its future development prospects are quite promising. Nowadays, most of the batteries used in two wheeled electric vehicles are still lead-acid batteries. Compared with lead-acid batteries, sodium batteries have higher energy density, are safer, and have good low-temperature performance, which can meet the battery technology needs of electric two wheelers. In addition, compared to lithium batteries, sodium batteries have lower costs, are safer, and have better low-temperature performance, but their energy density and cycle life are lower. In the future, sodium battery technology will gradually mature, and energy density and cycle life are expected to improve.
